“I’ve been growing vegetables since I was 10 years old, when I threw a handful of Kentucky Wonder Pole beans in the ground, and marveled at the profusion of new green life emerging from the brown cracked earth.
A few years later, my father and brother helped me build a raised vegetable garden, and then a small greenhouse:
I grew Spaghetti Squash in the greenhouse, and Venus Flytraps. And I remember, from the main bed, stewing up some rhubarb and strawberries I’d grown. Not to mention a huge amount of tomatoes from vines that sprawled all over the place. I read Organic Gardening Magazine in the early 70’s, long before it became mainstream or popular.
In gardening one can find peace, fun, camaraderie, and last but not least, food!
I dream of a world that beautiful, green, and thriving. Where communities full of love, optimism and courage thrive, grow and change, connected in part by their gardens and what they produce. A garden can promote peace, joy, and kindness, by bringing out those qualities that exist naturally within us. Friendship, love and courage are only a tomato away.”
