Golden Hill Community Garden
I’ve had a plot at the Golden Hill Community Garden since March 2011. I was on the waiting list for two and a half years. I was so excited to get that plot, I can’t tell you! I live in an apartment and didn’t have any place to do vegetable gardening – one of my big passions in life. The plots are generally 4 by 15 feet. Sounds small, but you’d be surprised how much you can grow in that small area if you use good organic methods. Creating deep, rich, loose soil is the key. Of course, you don’t create it, it’s more like you foster it. But that’s a subject for another article!
From the San Diego Community Garden Network
“The Golden Hill Community Garden was started in April 2004 after many months of working with the City of San Diego and Balboa Park. The organic garden is located in a once unused and weed covered area that now boasts twenty six carefully tended plots.
In addition to tending their own plots, each gardener is responsible for taking part in communal tasks to keep the garden as a whole healthy. Each month there is a meeting for all of the gardeners to foster education, cameraderie, and problem solving.”
From the garden’s website:
“The Golden Hill Community Garden was established in 2004 and is located within Balboa Park along Russ Blvd between 24th and 25th Streets in Golden Hill. The garden currently includes 29 plots approximately 4’x15′ each for which members pay a semi-annual fee of $25. Garden membership meetings are held on the first Saturday of each month and work days are organized approximately quarterly.
The Golden Hill Community Garden provides members an opportunity to grow their own vegetables, flowers & herbs. Gardeners learn and share organic techniques that promote healthy gardens through individual and cooperative gardening, meetings, and shared information. The garden provides a peaceful place to meet neighbors, experience nature and enjoy the diversity of life.”
